Gateway to the Grand Canyon

South Rim: about 50 minutes

The listing puts the home about 50 minutes from the Grand Canyon's South Entrance Station. The South Rim stays open all year (NPS). On busy spring-break, summer and fall weekends, NPS warns of entrance lines of up to two hours between 10 AM and 4 PM, so go early.

Take the train to the rim

The Grand Canyon Railway leaves the historic Williams Depot daily (except Dec 25) for a 65-mile, 2-hour-15-minute ride to the Grand Canyon Depot, about 200 yards from the rim (Grand Canyon Railway).

Downtown Williams: about 15 minutes

Founded in 1881 and nicknamed the "Gateway to the Grand Canyon", Williams was the last Route 66 town bypassed by I-40, on Oct. 13, 1984. It sits at about 6,770 ft in the Kaibab National Forest (City of Williams).

Stargazing

Grand Canyon National Park was certified an International Dark Sky Park in June 2019 and holds an annual Star Party each June (NPS). Back at the house, the telescope, binoculars and hot tub make for an easy night under the stars.

Plan by season

When to come

Summer

Peak canyon season, plus June's Grand Canyon Star Party (NPS). The home has no A/C; it relies on ceiling fans and cooler mountain evenings.

Fall

Busy weekends at the park, so go early. Fire-pit nights on the deck.

Winter

The South Rim stays open, but NPS warns of winter driving conditions, and the last mile to the home is an unpaved road. Fireplace and hot tub season.
